The Coolest Girl in the World: How Chloe Sevigny became Chloe Sevigny
OK, so if you're anything like me, you've wondered how exactly Chloe Sevigny catapulted to the status of "Coolest Girl in the World/It-Girl/Fashion Darling." Her style is generally defined as eclectic and there is no doubt that she stands out against a sea of actresses and celebrities that dress generically seductive. So I finally decided to research her rise to fame and created the following (condensed) timeline:
1991 - At the age of 18, Sevigny leaves her family home in Connecticut for Brooklyn.
1993 - Sevigny is spotted in the East Village by Andrea Linett (former Sassy Magazine and Lucky Magazine editor, current fashion director of eBay). She is asked by Linett to intern at Sassy Magazine. She later models for the magazine and for Kim Gordon's (Sonic Youth) label "X-Girl."
Author Jay McInerney spots Sevigny around NYC and dubs her the new "it-girl." He publishes a 7-page article about her in the New Yorker. http://archives.newyorker.com/?i=1994-11-07#folio=182
Sevigny befriends Harmony Korine in Washington Square Park during her senior year of high school. Korine subsequently casts her in his movie "Kids."
Over the next few years, Sevigny appeared in a slew of lesser known, independent films, as well as more popular, mainstream films. Generally, most of her roles were considered controversial. Some of her films include Trees Lounge (1996), I Shot Andy Warhol (1996), Gummo (1997), The Last Days of Disco (1998), Boys Don't Cry (1999) and American Psycho (2000).
2002 - Sevigny collaborates with Tara Subkoff for the 2003 Imitation of Christ collection.
2007 - Sevigny becomes the spokesperson for the French fashion house Chloe's new fragrance.
2009 - Sevigny collaborates with Opening Ceremony on a women's, men's, and unisex clothing line.
2010 and beyond - These days you can see Chloe on the HBO series "Big Love" as everyone's favorite sister wife, Nicki Grant.
